Action for Inclusion

The Action For Inclusion: FASD Audits Project is a two-year educational and training pilot project designed to increase the capacity of communities throughout BC and Canada in their ability to effectively accommodate people living with Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD).

This two-year project will work with community organizations throughout the Cowichan Valley Regional District and other parts of Vancouver Island and British Columbia to assess their knowledge about FASD and to build their capacity to accommodate people living with it.

Specifically, the objectives of the project are:
  1. Increase capacity within the communities of the Cowichan Valley Regional District to be more inclusive of people living with FASD by involving at least eight community organizations in the FASD Audit process which will include assessments of physical and social environments, in-service training workshops that respond to the needs identified, and opportunities for follow-up support for strategy implementation and best practice exchange.

  2. Change attitudes about people living with FASD that can lead to community exclusion and crime by including them in the development and implementation of project activities that educate the community about FASD inclusion strategies.

  3. Teach other Canadian communities how to develop and implement this model through: working with four additional communities in other parts of BC, holding a provincial workshop to transfer the model and its best practices to a wide range of BC communities, providing a workshop at a national FAS conference, the development of a project web site, project network/list serve, and the development of a resource manual.
During Year 1 of the project, staff living with FASD will work under the guidance of the project manager to complete comprehensive on-site assessments of community service providers throughout the Cowichan Valley Regional District. In-service training modules that meet the specific needs identified in the assessment of each organization will follow. Assistance with strategy implementation, the development of a web site, and a regional strategy session to brainstorm and share best practices will round out the FASD Audit process in its first year.

During Year Two, we propose to work with at least four additional British Columbia communities to develop workshops that will transfer the Action For Inclusion Model and develop written action plans for local implementation. Feedback about physical, social and institutional changes towards FASD Inclusion will be obtained through follow-up and evaluation and will be shared at a provincial strategy session and at a national FASD conference.
