My Story

Stories from people living with FASD
Stories from family and friends of people living with FASD.

My name is Leila and I am a 31-year-old adoptee. I have Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD). I graduated from Lake Cowichan Secondary and completed the Office Administration / Medical Specialty at Malaspina College in 1992. I have been involved with FASD for many years, being one of 6 adopted children with varying degrees of alcohol effects. Some of my interests include theatre, music, fishing, golfing, scuba diving and swimming. Currently I work part time in addition to my role as team member with the Action for Inclusion Project.

My name is Mary and I am a 31-year-old woman living with FASD. When I was little in school I remember that I could do one thing one day and then the next day I couldn’t remember how to do it, or that I did it at all. This used to make my teachers upset with me. I saw a speech therapist because I had trouble pronouncing some words.

My Name is Dallas and I am a 25-year-old parent of a four-year-old son. I have FASD and have been involved with numerous FAS associations and projects, most recently as a team member with the Action for Inclusion project. Using my personal expertise, I provide support, information and access to services to assist people who want to know about, or who have to deal with FASD. I graduated from Frances Kelsey High School in 1997; participated in Air Cadets for 7 years, and enjoy art, music and rock climbing.

My name is Ken. I am 23 years old and I was born in Victoria on August 3rd 1980. I am Native and Irish; I have been living with my adoptive parents since I was two years old. In the fall of 2002 I traveled to Winnipeg to take part in a First Nation’s Summit on people with disabilities, where I offered a unique perspective on FASD. I feel that I have a lot of experience with the problems associated with FASD, as I have been living with it since I was born. I am looking forward to talking to you all and offering a new personal, perspective on the disorder.

My Name is Georgia, I am 18 years old. I am in foster care, I have been in foster care since I was 6 years old. I have been in more than 10 different foster homes. School for me was a little hard growing up. I think I started modified programs at grade 7. I have known that I had FAE for a while but I just never talked about it.
